Flat Fees
Based on our commitment to providing affordable legal services, we offer flat fees in many of our cases. A flat fee is a set amount that the client must pay for our services. Once the client pays that set amount, the client is not responsible for paying any additional funds towards legal fees, with the exception of case expenses, such as filing costs and travel expenses. The advantage of a flat fee is that one never has to worry about a case becoming more expensive than what they agree upon at the time we are hired. Because we dedicate a great deal of time to our cases, we often end up providing many free hours of legal services in flat fee cases, because we work more hours than are covered by the flat fee. And, in the event we work less hours than covered by the flat fee, we refund the difference! The disadvantage of flat fees is that we do ask clients to pay as much as possible of the flat fee up front, as opposed to non-flat fees, which are generally paid in multiple payments throughout the pendency of the case.
Non-Flat Fees
While BACL represents clients in all areas of state and federal criminal law, some cases are more unpredictable than others in terms of the amount of time and resources that are necessary to effectively represent the client. In some cases, we are not able to settle on a flat fee, because it is impossible to accurately estimate the total cost at the time we come into the case. In non-flat fee cases, we often request an initial retainer and set up a payment plan for and future balance that might accrue. The advantage to a non-flat fee is that it allows clients to make payments throughout the case, dependent on the issues that arise during our representation. The disadvantage to non-flat fees is that they are less predictable.
Typical/Average Costs
- Misdemeanor: $3,000 – $7,500.
- State Felonies Through Preliminary Hearing: $6,000 – $25,000.
- State Trials and State Appeals: Please inquire during our initial consultation; case dependent.
- Federal Felony Trials and Federal Appeals: Please inquire during our initial consultation; case dependent.
- Federal and State Writs of Habeas Corpus: Please inquire during our initial consultation; case dependent.
- Federal and State Extradition Matters: Please inquire during our initial consultation; case dependent.
